Our panel of experts addressed AI myths and misconceptions at the Festival of Work.

The Mesmerise Solutions team recently hosted the AI Lab at the Festival of Work in London. During a live Q&A session, we invited attendees to share the most common myths they’ve heard about AI. Our expert panel, comprising Solutions CEO Patrick Rafferty, CTO Dan Donovan, and Head of Data Science Ivelize Rocha Bernardo, Ph.D., was ready to debunk AI myths and misconceptions. We’ve distilled the insights from this session into this post.

Will AI make HR less transparent?

The impact of AI on HR transparency depends on its implementation. Properly implemented, AI can make HR processes more transparent. However, according to the current ethical considerations, disclosing when AI is used in recruitment is advised, allowing candidates to understand and challenge AI’s decisions. This transparency helps individuals feel safer and more engaged while supporting the hiring team in more effective, streamlined operations. Want to learn more about ethical AI? Can AI have biases, and if so, how do you counteract these biases?

Yes, AI can have biases because it is trained on data that may contain human biases. To counteract this, we must ensure data quality by including diverse groups in the training data and continuously monitoring AI outputs. Similarly to the recruitment process with AI, we need to provide mechanisms for people to challenge AI decisions – this will help to identify and mitigate biases. Finally, regular and thorough audits and updates to AI systems are crucial as society and norms evolve, as well as the AI use cases and training data.

Will AI eliminate the need for junior roles or graduates?

Contrary to the belief that AI will eliminate the need for junior roles or graduates, we see it as a supportive resource. AI can accelerate junior employees’ learning and development journey, enabling them to progress more rapidly. Instead of replacing these roles, AI serves as a tool that junior employees can interact with, ask questions, and learn from without fear of judgment. It empowers them to quickly acquire the knowledge and skills needed to advance in their careers.

Can AI solve all problems?

While AI is undeniably powerful, it’s important to remember that it can’t solve every problem. As a probabilistic model, AI excels with structured data and predefined rules but struggles with tasks requiring deep human intuition and understanding. It’s a tool that can enhance our capabilities, but it’s not a magic solution for every issue. Understanding its limitations is crucial for responsible and effective use.

Can AI handle all aspects of employee training and development?

AI can assist with training by providing tailored learning experiences and tracking progress. However, the development aspect, which includes mentoring and personal growth, still requires human interaction. AI can enhance training programs but probably can’t fully replace the human elements of development.

Is AI only for big companies or companies with big budgets?

AI is not just for big companies or those with large budgets. While building custom AI models can be costly, many AI tools and platforms are accessible to smaller companies. These tools can help businesses become more efficient and competitive without massive investments. Open-source models and cloud-based AI services make AI technology accessible to organizations of all sizes. Regardless of your company’s size, it’s critical to approach the AI solutions rollout responsibly to maximize your investment. To get started, we’ve put together this practical guide: Kick Start Your Company’s AI Journey.

Can AI provide the unique customer experiences that people seek?

AI can significantly enhance customer experiences by analyzing vast amounts of data to personalize interactions and predict customer needs. However, while AI can automate and optimize many aspects of customer service, it cannot fully replicate the human touch that often defines a truly unique and memorable experience. For instance, AI can be trained on hundreds of thousands of customer interactions to identify and replicate positive interactions. AI can help create a consistent, high-quality customer experience by understanding the context behind these interactions. However, the nuanced understanding and empathy that come naturally to humans are complex for AI to replicate entirely. Therefore, the best approach is a hybrid, where AI handles routine tasks and provides data-driven insights, allowing human employees to focus on building deeper, more personal connections with customers.

Can AI understand human emotions?

AI can detect certain emotional cues from data, such as specific choice of words or tone. Still, it doesn’t truly understand emotions the way humans do. It can detect patterns and respond accordingly, acknowledging feelings like frustration or sadness. The data used to train AI will limit its understanding. While AI can mimic empathy to an extent, its responses are based on algorithms and patterns rather than genuine emotional comprehension.

How can AI help in human resources innovation?

AI can boost some of the HR processes and improve employee experience. For example, AI can help employees quickly access company policies and legislative information, such as maternity leave options, ensuring they feel supported and informed. In recruitment, AI can streamline resume reviews, narrow thousands of applications to a manageable number based on predefined criteria, save time, and ensure fair selection. Additionally, AI personalizes employee training and development by providing tailored advice and tracking progress. By handling routine inquiries and administrative tasks, AI frees HR professionals to focus on strategic issues, improving overall HR efficiency and employee satisfaction.
